The 3-tier MVP framework: Spark, Launch, Scale

Not every idea needs a full build. A simple framework for deciding how much to build first - Spark, Launch, or Scale.

The 3-tier MVP framework: Spark, Launch, Scale

The most expensive mistake I see founders make isn't picking the wrong tech or the wrong builder. It's building too much, too soon.

They raise a bit of money or scrape together a budget, then try to build the whole vision in version one. Months later, most of the runway is gone and they still haven't learned whether anyone wants the thing.

There's a simpler way to think about it. Before you build anything, decide which of three tiers you actually need.

Spark

A Spark is the smallest thing that proves your core idea works. One feature. One automation. One workflow that does the single most important job.

You build a Spark when you're not yet sure the idea holds - when you need to put something in front of real users or real data and watch what happens before committing more.

Roughly two weeks, around $5k. The goal isn't a business. It's an answer.

Launch

A Launch is a real MVP - a working product that real users can sign up for and use. Design, build, AI, deployment, all of it.

You build a Launch when you've validated the core (often with a Spark first) and you're ready to go to market. It's not the full vision - it's the smallest complete version that delivers the main value end to end.

Two to four weeks. From around $10k.

Scale

Scale is what comes after it's working. More features, deeper functionality, ongoing iteration on what the data is telling you.

You build at the Scale tier when you have traction and the question has shifted from "does this work?" to "how do we make this bigger and better?"

This is the only tier where spending more clearly makes sense - because now you're investing in something proven, not a guess.

How to know which one you need

Ask yourself one question: what am I trying to learn or earn right now?

  • Trying to learn whether the idea works → Spark.
  • Trying to earn your first real users and revenue → Launch.
  • Already have both, and growing → Scale.

Most founders think they need a Launch when a Spark would answer their question for a fifth of the cost. And almost no one needs to start at Scale.

The takeaway

Build the smallest tier that answers your current question. Prove it. Then - and only then - spend more.

The founders who win aren't the ones who build the most. They're the ones who learn the fastest for the least.
